Women's Issues

The term “women’s issues” is broad and can refer to anything that might affect a women’s mental health. Some issues, such as post-partum depression, are specific to women, while others, such as anxiety, can affect both men and women. However, women may experience the issue differently. There are many types of issues that women can face today, and some of the most prominent concerns include sexual assault, woman-specific health problems, body image problems, self-esteem, sexuality, discrimination, sexism or stereotyping. Therapists specializing in women’s issues will provide a safe and supportive environment to help to empower their clients so they can find balance, improve their quality of life, and experience relief from emotional suffering. Becoming a mother was a transformational process that opened a window into a world of oppression I had not known. The impossible expectations of mothers in this culture creates significant distress that is often pathologized. I help women reclaim their voice and meet themselves again.

— Kezia Pierce, Licensed Clinical Social Worker in Kingston, NY

Here in the South, there is a level of sexism in the very air we breathe, the way we were coached to behave, and in the way others were trained to view us. It can be a lot to navigate what it means to be a woman - in your family, in the workplace, in a relationship, as a parent, as a partner, in social circles. If things just feel really hard and you can't put your finger on why, we can explore that! There are lots of ways to take charge of yourself more effectively.

— Larissa Smith, Licensed Clinical Social Worker

Moving through this world as a feminine person brings its unique challenges and gifts. Many of us feel cut off from our instincts and intuition, the brave, fierce, and discerning sides of ourselves, and the empathic, deep-feeling, and nurturing. In therapy I work to help you process, heal from, and find your own sense of meaning within the varied experiences that many women experience across the lifespan.

— Jackie Turner, Marriage and Family Therapist Associate in Portland, OR

Let's call this "Pelvic Issues" instead -- not just for "women." I collaborate with gynecologists and pelvic floor physical therapists to ensure the whole person receives treatment. When you're dealing with specific medical or psychological challenges related to your vulva, pelvic area, or reproductive parts I'm well-versed in combining the medical and physical with the psychological and emotional. It's all interconnected and you need a therapist who understands and can help you navigate that.

— Kayna Cassard, Marriage & Family Therapist in Santa Monica, CA

I'm passionate about helping women and girls find their voice, lean in, and find fulfillment through assertiveness training, trauma-informed care, and providing a safe and compassionate place to heal and grow.

— Madeline Verdesca, Therapist in Roswell, GA

Many women are walking around with #metoo traumas, issues with inequality in marriage and at work, and a plethora of other issues related to having a female body. Women also sometimes struggle with motherhood, having had abortions, family issues, and a host of other troubles that need sorting out. I am a feminist therapist, and I enjoy helping my female clients make sense of their experiences using a feminist lens.

— Brandie Sellers, Licensed Professional Counselor in Timnath, CO

Are you exhausted? Feel like you’re doing everything and going nowhere? More than 1 in 5 women experience a mental health disorder in their lifetime. The difference between normal stress and mood dysregulation and a mental health disorder is characterized as “clinically significant distress” but we so often minimize our own distress that we believe we simply aren’t coping well or that we’re just a mess. I'm here to be a safe space for you to heal.

— Sydney Phillips, Licensed Professional Counselor in Chandler, AZ

I love working with teen girls and adult women navigating complex health issues, chronic illness, chronic pain, infertility and birth trauma. Learn third wave trauma informed CBT tools like DBT, ACT and somatic exercises to navigate overwhelming emotions, feelings and life events.

— Kelsey Bates, Licensed Mental Health Counselor in New York, NY

My approach is built on a foundation of feminist, anti-oppression values. I believe therapy is ineffective if the greater social context a person lives in is not examined critically; most of the time, doing so is empowering for all genders.

— Laurel Roberts-Meese, Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist in SAN FRANCISCO, CA
