About My Clients
As I specialize in working with LGBTQ+ clients and others who have been impacted by marginalization, issues often arise around self-worth, anxiety, co-dependency, shame, assertiveness, attachment and depression. The therapy session is a space to untangle the complex threads of experience that have led to these outcomes and to practice new ways of being. I currently accept Aetna and Cigna for Michigan clients.
My Background and Approach
Generally, obstacles to mental health come in the two forms. The first are false and unhelpful beliefs about self and others that have developed due to lack of support through difficult life experiences. The second is emotional overwhelm which causes us to react automatically and defensively rather than thoughtfully. I help clients identify and re-approach these pain points with more information, support and creativity in order to transform beliefs and learn to regulate through stress. This means combining evidence-based approaches like CBT and polyvagal theory with a psychodynamic view on personal history and the present-moment awareness and warm relationship of Gestalt. The end goal of this process is increased flexibility and choice in your actions, better alignment with your values and acceptance of those aspects of self which have previously been sources of shame.
Social Justice Issues I Care About
Sexual, gender and relationship diversity No one wants to worry about being judged or having to explain basic aspects of their identity or relationships before getting anything done. That's why I specialize in members of sexual and gender minority groups- our common basis of understanding accelerates the pace at which we can work toward those goals which are unique to you. Racism As a white person I cannot approach the experiences of people of color from an insider position, but I am passionate about supporting anyone whose power and positive sense of self is at risk from oppressive societal systems. I strive to be a safe person to open up to about experiences of racism, including any moments within our therapy relationship that don't feel right to you. As an antiracist I do my own work while remaining humble when I mess up, and you can expect accountability from me. I hope to cheer on your successes and and to form a warm and trusting relationship over time.
