About My Clients
My ideal clients don’t want a factory or pill mill. They want to be seen, heard and known. They are looking for a smart, collaborative, non judgmental treatment provider familiar with the unique characteristics of the subculture you live in. I have been told that my demeanor is down to earth and I have a knack for explaining things in a relatable way. For years I worked on tv as a psychiatric expert for exactly this reason. When we work together I’m in your corner and help is on the way.
My Background and Approach
First of all, know you are in good hands. I have been in practice since 1997 and trained at top Ivy League schools. Because let’s face it, you need your doctor to be smart. But you also need your doctor to be relatable. There’s no room for shame or awkwardness in your sessions and you shouldn’t have to be worried that your treatment provider is passing judgement on your lifestyle, your lovestyle or who you are. With an extensive background in both therapy and medication management, I also get the need to work with someone who is not there to judge you, because shame can be the biggest obstacle to treatment success whether we are talking about sexual issues, substance related issues, relationship issues. If you can’t be candid with your shrink, your treatment is not going to get you where you want to be. In my practice I treat the whole person not just a diagnosis. Plus collaborative evidence based medication management when appropriate.
My Personal Beliefs and Interests
A longtime activist in the queer community, I believe everyone deserves a place at the table. So in these times when rights are being rolled back, I understand that there are new stressors that weren’t here before. At times like this we need community. I have always used my platform as a psychiatrist to amplify our message, from marching with actup as a physician in the early 1990s to directing and producing a documentary condemning so-called reparative therapy to make gay people straight. I was, to my knowledge, the first openly lesbian physician to co-host a call in radio show where we provided a safe space for young people in the queer community to get sound sex and relationship advice at a time when many didn’t have a supportive family to help. And I’ll always be here helping my clients live their fullest bravest lives free from shame, addiction, food and body issues, and the stigmatizing messaging we are inundated with. You do you, I’m here to help.
