About My Clients
Clients can expect to be seen and heard, respected and challenged. Anyone who has the desire to change is a client I can help. I tend to build strong, long-term relationships with my clients, whom I consider to be part of my clinical family even when they are gone for years at a time between our working periods together. I work particularly well with military and veterans, first responders, teenagers, couples, and those with a particular interest in eco-anxiety/resilience.
My Background and Approach
We are all a product of our backgrounds and experiences, and clinicians are no different. My own history as a combat infantryman in the Army, as well as time spent as an EMT, State Trooper, and wilderness field instructor, all contribute to the worldview through which I treat my clients. Additionally, I am a Professor of Counselor Education, whereby I have the immense privilege of teaching the next generation of clinical mental health counselors during their graduate studies.
My Personal Beliefs and Interests
I work closely with a wide variety of people from many walks of life, and believe it is vital to meet people where they are, allowing them the time and space to explain their lived experiences to me, rather than relying on preconceived notions I may have about any given ethnicity, religion, etc. As a white, cisgender man, I work hard to be an ally to those without the same privileges, and am open to receiving feedback about any ideas expressed, etc., where I may still have a blind spot. I teach advanced LGBTQ+ counseling techniques and multicultural counseling as a professor and believe I am firmly established as an ally in those spaces.
