About My Clients
Life is full of peaks and valleys and sometimes it can feel like we get lost in the valleys. This can lead to many different problems such as depression, anxiety, relationship problems and substance use. Sometimes we find ourselves repeating unhealthy, self-defeating patterns. Or we lack the coping skills needed to overcome challenges. We may have experienced trauma that then creates new challenges. Whatever the challenge, I can help you to overcome it and begin creating the life you desire.
My Background and Approach
As a therapist, I view myself more as a facilitator or guide that is here to help you get to the root of your problems and resolve them. My approach is strengths-based which means that I identify and look for ways to use your own strengths to resolve your challenges. In that sense therapy is very collaborative. I am trained and experienced in a number of modalities including CBT, DBT and trauma-focused therapies and I draw from all of them as needed. I am a strong proponent of the DBT concept of "do what works" and in that way I am able to incorporate practicality into each person's unique presentation. Exploring and identifying limiting beliefs and teaching you how to challenge and change those beliefs often leads to significant changes in emotion and behavior. Understanding the root causes of your difficulties is important, but only if combined with changes in behavior. I have over 30 years of experience and I know that therapy works "if you work it". My Personal Beliefs and Interests
I believe that each of us possesses an inner wisdom that knows our worth and what we need. Some of us may have sensed this in childhood, but as we grow up this sense becomes drowned out as we internalize limiting beliefs and judgments about who is deserving/not deserving, who has worth/doesn't have worth, how we "should" be/"shouldn't" be and so on. As humans, we all have the same basic needs and desires for love, a sense of purpose, belonging and worth but we are taught to look outside of ourselves to find these things. As a highly sensitive kid, I was keenly aware of others' judgments and disapproval. Through therapy and my own recovery journey, I've learned how to tap into my own inner wisdom and trust it to guide me in life. With that personal experience and over 30 years of clinical experience I can help you to discover and use your own strengths to acquire new skills and strategies and start living the life you were intended to live.
